Is God Speaking To Me?
All of sudden you get this thought in your head. You weren't even thinking about that. How did that thought get there? Was that God?
A lot of people say they hear from God. Some are really legitimate Christian people, others are a little on the eccentric wacky side.
God Spoke To Me
What if I told you God has spoken to me since I first gave my heart to Him when I was 17 years old? Some of you might think I'm a little wacky. I can remember the first time I heard God speak to me. It was almost audible. I was so sick, dizzy, tired, feeling buzzed and weird laying on my bed. I'd just eaten a bowl of cereal loaded with sugar. I was terrified of how sick I was feeling and began praying and it was like he said to me, "It's the sugar." I found out a few weeks later I had hypoglycemia--low blood sugar.
Another time God strongly spoke to me was a day I chose to go horseback riding instead of to Wednesday night prayer meeting. He kept telling me to go back to town, but instead I went with my boyfriend and his family to ride bare back at the gravel pit. But all the way down that first road, the Holy Spirit urgently warmed me to go back, but I resisted, and eventually those voices went away. That night as I was riding in and out of the water, my horse got spooked, bolted out of the water, I lost the reigns and was thrown on my head into the gravel on the bank.
The third time I heard God's voice was when I wanted to marry my second husband. This was a guy that appeared to be a perfect gentlemen, opened doors for me, brought me flowers, told me how beautiful I was and how much he loved me, and even went to church with me. I felt God urging me not to get married. But I thought I knew best. After nearly being beaten to death in my first marriage, this guy seemed like the perfect one for me. I went ahead with the marriage, later learned he was addicted to pornography, stayed with him even though he cheated on me, until I learned he had sexually molested our three children.
Needless to say, now I try to listen to and obey that still small voice. He's called me to do things that I would have never done without Him in my life. But the things he has called me to do were either for my growth and healing or for someone else's.
To Make Sure It's God...
But this week on Dr. Phil I saw a woman who said that her daughter was being sexually molested by her ex-husband and when the courts wouldn't help her, she took matters into her own hands. She grabbed a hammer and went over to her ex's house, knowing her daughter was living there. She claimed she prayed, "God if you want me to kill him let this hammer break this window."
That wasn't God telling her to do something, but her wanting to feel okay with what she was about to do. Of course a hammer is going to break a window! Hello! And of course God would not want you to murder, it's one of the ten commandments.
This woman is a fugitive, wanted for attempted murder. Instead of protecting her daughter, she's made it so she will probably never have contact with her again. She ended breaking that window, climbing through, peeking in her daughter's bedroom and then making her way to her ex's bedroom. He hid behind his new wife when she came at him with the hammer, so she hit his wife several times.
Dr. Phil had her on his show, interviewed her, had her husband on the phone interviewed him, and also had all the reports from CPS, the doctor and hospitals, etc. There was no proof anywhere that he abused their daughter. But the mother of the child had neglected the child and that's why the father had custody.
Sadly, child molestation occurs in too many homes and sometimes there is not physical proof. Also sad is the fact that people who are out of their minds use God as a way of escape to do something crazy. I had a daughter that was molested by her father. I left him, and one night while I was out, he kidnapped my kids and took them from me.
If It's God--He'll Make A Way...
I didn't go after him and kill him. Instead, he had people trying to hurt me if I tried to get my kids back. So I prayed and had to do the unthinkable. I went back with him, to get those babies back in my custody. And ever night while he slept, I was up packing our bags. Finally, he got called away on a shoveling job for an apartment complex. While he was gone, I loaded the kids and our bags up, and left in the middle of an ice storm to a shelter out of town.
Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord. God has his way of working this out. My job was just to protect my kids and get away from him. Word of God does speak, if you're really listening. Sometimes it may not be what you want to hear, but it will always be what you need to hear.
God Speaks Truth...
Trouble is today, people want what they want. They want someone to agree with them. God isn't always going to agree with you, especially when you are acting crazy and doing something that will hurt you or others. I would rather hear someone tell me the truth that will set me free, than some lie that will hurt me and everyone else down the road.
God speaks to us in different ways, through the Bible, through our pastor, through a message on TV, a post on FB, an email, dreams, visions, and sometimes an inspirational thought. He can communicate to us in any way he chooses. But even when we suspect we are hearing from God, we are to take every thought captive to the throne of Jesus Christ, not just act on every thought we get. We need to ask, "God, is this from you?"
If your thoughts are from God they will always line up with His Word and you will be helping, not hurting yourself and others. The mother on Dr. Phil, if she really thought her child was being molested, could have waited for visitation and fled with the girl.
What Do You Think?
What are your thoughts on this? Have you ever heard from God? Did you listen? What happened as a result of that? We'd love to know.
