The ORGANIC Truth
With all my allergies to wheat, gluten, and processed foods, obviously I've taking a liking to buying anything that's organic. However, I'm finding that all ORGANIC FOODS aren't equal. It's come to my attention that organic foods, although they aren't full of harmful pesticides have other additives that consumers need to be weary of.
What Your Organic Seal Isn't Telling You
We often think of organic as more nutritious, but sometimes this isn't the case. Many of these foods can be: lacking in nutrients, loaded with sugar, and even contain "bad fat". Take Honey Nut Cheerios versus Organic Honey Oatios, although you won't find harmful chemicals in the box of organic cereal, you will find high levels of refined carbohydrates (bad starches and sugars). Always read labels to be sure you're getting the best nutrition for your family. Organic doesn't always mean nutritious.
Meat--Are You Buying The Bloody Lie?
For over a year I've been horrifically ill with terrible life threatening allergies. Although I was eliminating my trigger and allergy foods, I was still having symptoms. I didn't think it could be the meat I was buying, because I had switched to those that were labeled ALL NATURAL and lower in fat. For some reason I thought since the label said "all natural" that I was getting meat without all the hormones, steroids, and chemicals--NOT. As I began doing more research, I learned about "organic meats" and began buying the "vegetarian fed" selections. Then I learned that these animals are fed grain, which I was trying to avoid due to being gluten intolerant. That's when I discovered "grass fed" meat. Not only did the grass fed meat taste a lot better, but it wasn't making me sick either.
Besides, grain fed animals lose important nutrients. Compared with grass fed animals, grain fed animals only get about 1/4 the vitamin E, 1/8 the beta carotene, and 1/3 as much of the omega 3 fatty acids. Where grass fed animals get all the nutrients, they also get a cancer-fighting fat called "CLA". This agent has been known to reduce cancerous tumors by 50%. The grain that animals are fed actually kills the CLA. Since grain also causes the digestive tract in animals to be acidic there is a greater risk for E-coli to multiply and cause consumers to become ill.
Most farmers today, although they are not certified organic, do not use harmful pesticides or other chemicals, the only thing that keeps them from being certified is due to the fact that they use nitrogen. So I agree with the author who wrote this article, that if I had a choice between organic vegetarian fed meat or grass fed, I would choose grass fed every time.
